Just in 24 hours after announcing her presidential bid, California senator and Indian American Kamala Harris have raised $1.5 million, her campaign aides told Politico.

This is a massive haul for the first-time senator from California that tied Sen. Bernie Sanders’ one-day total from his 2016 presidential campaign.

Harris, announced her presidential bid on Martin Luther King Jr. Day during an appearance on "Good Morning America." She crossed the $1 million thresholds before 7:30 p.m. and raised $1.5 million from 38,000 donors, her aides said.

She is scheduled to hold a launch rally at Frank H. Ogawa Plaza in downtown Oakland later this month.

As a point of comparison, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, during the first day of his campaign back in 2015 has raised approximately the same amount from 35,000 donors.

Harris’ campaign in the first 12 hours made $110,000 in revenue from its online merchandise store that sells t-shirts, hats and tote bags.

The campaign logo and colors are inspired by the historic campaign of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, who, 47 years ago, became the first black person and the first woman to seek the nomination of a major party.

Her average online campaign contribution amount is $37, and she has received contributions from over 38,000 donors, they said.

"This campaign will not take a dime from corporate PACs - just people, like you," Harris wrote on Twitter.

Harris had selected Baltimore as her 2020 campaign headquarters while her second office would be based in Oakland. The theme of her campaign is: “Kamala Harris: For the People.”

Harris, who is the first Indian-origin United States Senator and first black Senator from California, is the fourth Democratic woman leader to enter the presidential race.

The first Hindu lawmaker in the U.S. Congress Tulsi Gabbard has announced her presidential bid recently. In addition, Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand from New York are in the presidential race.

The Democratic primary race, which begins early next year is expected to be jam-packed, in which the winner would grab the party’s nomination and challenge President Donald Trump in the November 2020 presidential election.
