It shows that China is preparing for a long haul along the 3,488km Line of Actual Control (LAC), keeping pace with the pressure on India even as the two countries discuss about disengagement and de-escalataion.

This was taken note of after observing reinforcements of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) posts, relocation of troops, and rapid strengthening of road infrastructure across points occupying Aksai Chin for over 30 days,

Soon, the ninth round of the India-China military dialogue on disengagement and de-escalation is expected to take place.

As per a senior military commanders, more than 10 dugouts each at amar Lungpa, 30km east of Karakoram Pass; and at Mount Sajum, south of Rechin La is being constructed by PLA.

Further,70km east of Daulet Beg Oldi, at Qizil Jilga, troop deployment is increasing.

Both India and China have differences on their perceptions of the LAC at these points, that was known  during the failed exchange of maps on June 17, 2002.

Difference between the two is  176 sq-km at Samar Lungpa, and 129 sq-km at Mount Sajum.

A major PLA outpost is Qizil Jilga. Given that the section of South Block believes that PLA wants to disengage and de-escalate soon, it clearly means that the Indian Army might have to spend their winter in subpolar Ladakh.

What are the changes witnessed?

On the road from Shendong to Spanggur Gap, just south of Chushul, over 60 heavy-equipment transport vehicles have been noticed.

Apart from this, surveillance equipment is being installed by the Chinese all along the LAC in Ladakh.

Chinese tank transporters are noticed at Gobak, 60km east of LAC indicating that PLA have not dropped their guard down.

In Aksai Chin at Rudog, Mapotheng, Sumxi, and west of Chang La, north-east of Demchok, troops have been redeployed.

As per Indian National Security Planners, focusing on the Depsang Bulge area and the DBO sector, the Chinese army is undertaking strategic road construction for faster deployment on LAC.

It is understood that PLA is constructing a road north of Karakoram Pass to Chip Chap Valley for faster deployment across the DBO post.

News reports state that PLA has plans to move back to Finger 8 on the north bank of Pangong Tso from Finger 4.

They are experimenting an exercise to widen and black tar a road from Finger 6 to Finger 8.

Their main motive is faster deployment of PLA in case there is an eruption on the north banks of the frozen salt water lake.

PLA is deployed across LAC. Now, China has kept container housing modules across Jeevan Nullah in Depsang Plains and Dehra La across the Bulge area.

In total, 285 container units have come up south west of Samzungling, in the depth area of the Galwan Valley, which saw an outburst June 15.

Across Chumar, Shiqaunhe Town has turned into a major army supply depot with heavy construction materials left there to maintain continuous supply of heavy equipment.
