WhatsApp is said to be creating a new optional premium subscription service for its consumer app that might provide extra customization and convenience options for users willing to pay. This new level, referred to as WhatsApp Plus, is believed to be in the works for both Android and iOS versions of the messaging app. While the basic messaging service will likely remain free, the paid option could include additional tools intended to personalize the app’s appearance and improve chat organization. According to a post on X by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp Plus might focus heavily on visual changes. Subscribers could potentially alter the app’s theme, change accent colors throughout the app, and choose from various different app icons. Reports indicate that about 14 new icon styles are being developed, along with a variety of color choices that might let users customize the app's overall look.
This subscription plan could also increase the limit for pinning chats on WhatsApp. Currently, users can pin three conversations, but WhatsApp Plus subscribers might be able to pin up to 20 chats, allowing an extra 17 pinned conversations beyond the current maximum. Additionally, subscribers may get unique ringtones specifically made for WhatsApp. Each ringtone is expected to have a special design, helping users recognize incoming WhatsApp calls as different from alerts from other applications.
Furthermore, the information implies that more exclusive features for subscribers might be introduced later on. WhatsApp Plus users could gain access to unique sticker packs that free users will not have. Certain message reactions might also become more interactive, making chats feel more lively. Even if this subscription is available, the main features of WhatsApp are anticipated to stay free for all users, according to the report. Users will still be able to send and receive messages, make voice and video calls, share media, join group chats, and access privacy and safety features without any cost.
WhatsApp has not yet revealed any details about pricing or when the plan will be launched. The report mentioned that the features associated with WhatsApp Plus might also be altered before the company decides to release the subscription more broadly.
