The Indian Premier League has been put on hold due to escalating security issues related to the military tensions between India and Pakistan, as confirmed by sources from the BCCI on Friday. This decision follows the cancellation of the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala, which was halted over safety concerns. The location of the stadium is less than 100 kilometers away from Pathankot, where air raid warnings had been issued, leading the BCCI to make this critical decision. Representatives from the BCCI stated, “We have chosen to suspend the IPL indefinitely. Keeping our players safe is our highest priority. Therefore, we have paused the tournament for the time being. We will determine later if and when we can restart it. For now, the national interest takes precedence.”
The match in Dharamsala, which faced a delay due to rain, was suddenly interrupted when the stadium's floodlights failed. Initially thought to be a minor technical issue, the situation worsened as players and officials learned about the security threats from the air raid alerts. One player mentioned that there was a sense of “panic” among both teams, with foreign players especially anxious about their safety. Reports from Australian media noted that their players had also voiced safety concerns and were prepared to return home if necessary.
The audience present in Dharamsala, which had nearly filled the stadium to 80% capacity, was evacuated for safety protocols. As they left the venue, fans were heard chanting anti-Pakistan slogans. In light of the situation, the BCCI and the IPL governing body assessed the rapidly changing security landscape. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal communicated to PTI that the continuation of the league was uncertain, as they awaited government directives, which had not been received by Thursday night.
The immediate consequences of the security warnings have already surfaced, as flights to and from Dharamsala have been canceled and team buses are being rerouted to ensure safer exits.
