A high school senior in Maryland has not been allowed for participating in her school's graduation ceremony as she is pregnant. Media outlets reported that, 18-year-old Maddi Runkles, a Maryland high school senior was barred from the 2nd June ceremony at Heritage Academy in the Hagerstown because the girl violated the school's code of conduct by having premarital sex. In the month of January, Runkles discovered that she was pregnant.
After the girl’s pregnancy became known, the officials at small private Christian school have suspended Runkles for two days and also they removed her from her student council position.
Once, father of the girl sat on the Heritage board and he recused himself from the decisions involving his daughter. But ultimately, he quit the board to protest on how his daughter was treated.
Runkles said, she feels that she has been treated more harshly than the other students who have been suspended for some other reasons. The father of baby does not attend the Heritage Academy, said Runkles.
The couple do not plan on marrying. The Anti-abortion organization Students for Life said that Runkles should not be punished for having her pregnancy, but she should be praised for choosing to keep the baby.
The New York Times has quoted about David Hobbs, the Heritage Academy Administrator in a statement, which said that the matter is "an internal issue about which much prayer and discussion has taken place." The statement was issued on the side of the school's board of directors.
