Maryland Implements Strategies To Drop Opioid Overdoses And Deaths

Maryland implements various strategies to drop the opioid overdoses and deaths, according to the report published by American Medical Association (AMA).

Number of special training programs, including the training for how to use the Screening, Brief Intervention, and also Referral to Treatment strategy in the office-based settings are being provided by the Maryland State Medical Society (MedChi). The aim of the special training is to get 250 physicians to attend the 2 sessions planned on June 20th and 22nd.

“One of our roles is education outreach. The idea is to prescribe people the appropriate amount when opioids are necessary and that people use them [opioids] appropriately, and to also not leave any behind or in the medicine cabinet. It’s also to be able to better identify a patient who has a problem and needs help,” said MedChi CEO Gene Ransom.

During the first 9 months of the year 2016 there was a 72% increase in the heroin-related overdose deaths and also a 17% increase in the fatal opioid-related overdoses, as compared with the same period in the year 2015. During the year 2016 there were 13.3% less opioid prescriptions filled in Maryland ass compared with the year 2013, lagging behind the 14.6% of national decrease in the opioid prescriptions during the period. MedChi has contacted the Maryland physicians in order to encourage them to enlist in the state's prescription drug monitoring program. In addition to this, two AMA-supported bills have been signed by the Maryland governor which provided a great support for the treatment.

"We also support the increased emphasis on youth education to help our children and young adults understand the risks of opioid misuse and illicit drug use," said AMA Board Chairman Patrice Harris, MD, in a statement.
